Overview
The Flavor Exposure and Feeding Practices TEC conducted systematic reviews to examine the effects of repeated exposure to a single or multiple foods on acceptance of those foods or other foods. A review was conducted to examine the relationship between caregiver feeding practices in children from birth to 24 months and child growth, size, and body composition. In this review, feeding practices encompassed multiple strategies or behaviors that caregivers use while feeding children or facilitating self-feeding, including practices such as pressuring, restricting, or responsive feeding practices, as well as others. The TEC also conducted reviews to understand the relationship between exposure to flavors from the maternal diet during pregnancy (experienced by the fetus through amniotic fluid) and flavors from the maternal diet during the postpartum period (experienced by the infant through human milk feeding) on children’s subsequent response to similar flavors and odors.
For information on the Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project, see the Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project Page.
For information on the methodology that NESR used for this systematic review project, see the Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project Methodology Page.
Every full systematic review contains the systematic review question, literature selection criteria (inclusion/exclusion criteria), literature search strategies, lists of included and excluded studies (with rationale), a description and synthesis of the evidence, data tables, graded conclusion statements, and research recommendations. In addition, both a technical abstract and plain language summary are provided for each of the systematic reviews.
Systematic Review Questions
Flavor Exposure and Feeding Practices
What is the relationship between repeated exposure (timing, quantity, and frequency) to foods and early food acceptance?
What is the relationship between caregiver feeding practices for children from birth to 24 months old and the weight, growth, and body composition outcomes?
What is the relationship between maternal diet during pregnancy on flavor transfer to amniotic fluid, children’s behavioral response, and dietary intake?
What is the relationship between maternal diet during lactation on flavor transfer to breast milk, children's behavioral response, and dietary intake?
